L’RTDa finanziato dal “Centro Levi Cases” condurrà un’attività di ricerca che verterà sull’intera filiera di sviluppo relativa a sistemi avanzati di conversione e stoccaggio dell’energia, con particolare riferimento a dispositivi quali le celle a combustibile (fuel cells, FC), le batterie secondarie, e le batterie aperte a flusso (redox flow batteries, RFB). L’RTDa preparerà i componenti necessari al funzionamento dei dispostivi, con particolare riferimento a materiali elettrocatalizzatori, elettroliti, materiali per anodi e catodi di batterie secondarie, coppie redox e soluzioni elettrodiche per RFB. L’RTDa sarà responsabile della caratterizzazione dei componenti funzionali, che verranno studiati nel dettaglio al fine di determinarne la composizione chimica, la morfologia, la struttura, le proprietà termomeccaniche e la risposta elettrica. Le informazioni acquisite consentiranno all’RTDa di identificare i componenti funzionali più promettenti, che verranno utilizzati nella fabbricazione di dispositivi-prototipo. Questi ultimi andranno incontro ad un’accurata caratterizzazione in condizioni operative, tesa ad ottenere un quadro dettagliato del complesso panorama delle interazioni tra i vari componenti dei differenti dispositivi. In tal modo sarà possibile ottimizzare le procedure di preparazione dei componenti e di assemblaggio dei dispostivi, così da incrementare le loro prestazioni e durata di vita operativa. I risultati della ricerca avranno un duplice impiego. In una prima fase porteranno alla preparazione di brevetti, che costituiranno una valida base per avviare e sostenere processi di trasferimento di know-how con partner industriali. I risultati scientifici verranno infine disseminati nella comunità internazionale mediante pubblicazioni su riviste “peer-reviewed” ad alto impatto e partecipazione a congressi internazionali.
