VASE - Valorisation of Agri-food Wastes for Sustainable Energy production

ABSTRACT:
The search for renewable and sustainable energy sources is one of the main tools for achieving a complete circular economy (Ellen Mc Arthur Foundation, 2015). Particularly, the production of bioenergy obtained from natural and agro-natural sources represents an important ecosystem service and at the same time a tool to help achieving the goal set by the EU to produce at least 30% of energy from renewable sources (Gissi et al., 2015). Anaerobic digestion has been increasingly considered over the last two decades for the treatment of both solid and liquid municipal and industrial organic residues, with economic incentives coming from government policies being key drivers for process implementation.
The present research project is aimed at developing a macro-territorial model for the evaluation of biomass energy production based on the supply of production residues obtained from agricultural and derivative productions. The approach that will underlie the construction of this model includes:
- Data collection about the area and on the type of crops, in order to have a more precise knowledge of the territory's energy potential;
- GIS analysis to organize the collected data, accurately determine the size and location of any treatment facilities in the area;
- Technical and environmental assessments to evaluate the results and potential advantages.
The proposed model aims to provide a decision-making tool for the optimal design of the chains of valorisation of bioenergetic resources in support of a strategic system that is efficient from an economic and ecological point of view for the environment, without significantly impacting existing crops. The model can also be applied to other areas similar to the one being studied.
Finally, predictive analysis on transition to sustainable energy based on agri-food wastes will be carried on the basis of historical evolution modelling and providing aggregate predictive analyses.
