The project starts from a financial support of the Veneto regional administration under Regional Law 55/1999 given to the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Padova to activate a cooperation between the Schools of Engineering of Padova and Ethiopian Universities. The aim is to organise a Summer School in Addis Ababa focused on Renewable Energy exploitation, with a cooperation of professors from Padova, Addis Ababa Universities and the involvement of Italian companies.
Ethiopia is a country with strong demographic (93 Million inhabitants) and economic growth (+ 8% in 2012-13), with energy demand growing fast, even if only half of the population has access to the electricity grid.
The national programmes foresee a strong growth of electricity generation in the next decade, using the large potential of renewable energy. With a installed power of some 2.2 GW in 2015, wind power potential is estimated in the region of 100 GW, hydro power some 45 GW and geothermal electricity something between 5 and 15 GW. Photovoltaic has very good conditions in a country of 1 Million km2 close to equator and mainly good elevation.
The demand for technical knowledge in renewable energy deployment is high from local engineers (the country has one of the highest education rate among developing countries) and the Government is committed to support the professional growth of the young population.
In this framework of exponential growth of university population a bilateral agreement has been signed between the University of Padova and the Ethiopian Catholic University of St. Thomas Aquinas (ECUSTA) of Addis Ababa, aimed at the foundation of the School of Engineering of ECUSTA. One of the project aim is to specialise young Ethiopian engineers in renewable energy technologies adoption in the local context, with lessons focused on technical and economic aspects of renewable energy exploitation and many case studies.
The project involves three Ethiopian Universities:
- Ethiopian Catholic University of St. Thomas Aquinas (ECUSTA) of Addis Ababa,
- Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU),
- Addis Ababa Institute of Technology (AAU) – School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
The School received the sponsorship of Italian MAECI (Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Corporazione Internazionale) and is supported by the Institute of Italian Culture, acknowledged as an important initiative for promoting Italian-Ethiopian relations.
